Historical Postcards

1/1

Historical postcards, this series uses historic events and people’s personal memories to influence and develop simplistic line illustrations that recreate the history of Plymouth's Central Park. Talking to those who have used the park throughout their life, who have visited in the past or, attended events that happened there. We took archive materials such as newspaper clippings, personal and public photographs as a starting point for our illustrations. Combining our two individual styles to create a joint serious of historic postcards.

We used images from Fotonow’s archives as starting points. These include: South Devon couriers cycling team at Central Park. Circus pack down 1952, photographs from The Box Plymouth, Alex Williams skateboarding, Mother and child at the old clock tower 1947, Animals at the zoo and The Mayflower Swimming Pool.

WE ARE

DANIELLE AND ELOISE

Danielle

I am currently completing my second year of a BA Hons in Media Arts at The University of Plymouth, I work mainly within digital photography and have recently started creating elegant and minimalistic line illustrations. I have been working within a photographic field for a decade and have spent the past two years refining this skill. Within my photography, I make use of natural lighting and use my surroundings where possible. Illustration has been a hobby of mine but during my second year of study, I have been working on narrowing down my individual style and perfecting my work. I like to use simple lines and subtle tones.

I use multiple images to create a story, each image flows to the next to create the final outcomes. The simplicity of the drawings allows the meaning and complexity of the image to show through. Taking my inspiration from old photographs and archive materials, putting my own modern touch to them. Creating elegant recreations of historic events and memories.

I am currently studying at the University of Plymouth, in my second year of Media Arts. As a media artist, I have been practising skills of photography, videography and editing for nearly 4 years. I have created projects focusing on documentary, event and fashion photography, while also developing projects in videography of events and travel videos. More recently I have developed illustrated artworks. As I am establishing my individual illustration style, I have experimented with simple line drawings, animal creations, logos and portraits. All of my illustration artworks have a distinct aesthetic of minimalism, delicacy and a modern take on vintage styles, of which will continue to grow as I advance my skills as an illustration artist.
